Diabetes is a disease that requires careful glucose management. Since the pancreas has difficulty producing enough insulin to metabolize glucose (and/or the body is insulin resistant), it is crucial to monitor glucose throughout the day.
By carefully stabilizing glucose levels, diabetics can better control the symptoms and damaging effects of the disease.
There are many ways to do this, some of which are actually very straightforward. In fact, the medical field already has an official recommendation on how to manage glucose: the Diabetes Self Management Education or DSME.
The problem?
Very few people are receiving this education.
Diabetes Education as Effective as Medicine in Treating Diabetes
[trendingtopicsrelated]
Diabetes is on the rise all over the United States. Many health care professionals are eager to develop ways to help treat this epidemic without increasing overall spending.
Their solution? Diabetes Self Management Education.
The education program teaches patients tips on how to eat healthier and how to exercise moderately. Proponents of the program say that just ten hours of it can help patients significantly and can reduce the long term risks associated with the disease.
Doctors in Indiana are urging lawmakers to consider a comprehensive educational program, such as the DSME, for coverage under standard health insurance plans. As per their suggestions, Medicaid and Medicare will cover a portion of the training.
If the program is approved, it will make it much easier for patients to learn how to control blood glucose without the use of medication when possible. This, in turn, will ultimately reduce the total medical costs associated with the disease.
This is particularly important as many diabetes patients stop taking their medications within a year of getting a prescription. Since many will not be taking their medication, anyway, why not equip them with the tools to manage their glucose levels, medication-free?
