Sack Lunches Can Prevent Diabetes
According to a research study published by the American Heart Association (AHA), eating home-cooked meals can lower your risk of developing diabetes by 13%. (Or, conversely, eating out can significantly increase your risk for diabetes.)
The longitudinal study followed almost 100,000 people. Their eating habits and health were recorded. At the beginning of the study, none of the participants had cancer, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. By the end of the study, the researchers were able to get a clear view about how certain lifestyles impacted health over the course of a lifetime.
The most interesting data, at least to us, is what they found about lunch and dinner. Though they didn’t follow breakfast habits as closely (for some odd reason), they did find significant data regarding the other two meals.
Eating out, it seems, caused a significant increase in weight among the participants elected to do so. Research has already pointed out over the years being overweight is a major risk factor for both diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so it’s not a surprise that these participants, as it turns out, were more likely to have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.
By eating at home, or taking your lunch with you to work, you are in complete control of what you consume. You are naturally reducing your caloric intake and likely using fresh ingredients. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats are all packed with nutrients that can stabilize blood sugar and reduce inflammation throughout the body, both factors found in diabetes.
Also, don’t forget that by preparing your food at home, you are cutting way back on the price tag as well. You could easily save a couple of hundred bucks a month just by cooking at home!
