Here’s yet another reason why arcane marijuana laws need to be rewritten and updated. Weed is a boon for diabetics. A study released in the American Journal of Medicine noted that frequent and active cannabis users digested carbohydrates more efficiently than those who didn’t use the plant. That’s worthy of celebration. Three cheers for Mary-Jane!
The study conducted between 2005 and 2010 examined about 4,657 men and women. Twelve percent of the participants were active marijuana users and were 48 percent tried smoking grass at least once.
So here is the skinny regarding the smoky study: researchers discovered that the active cannabis smokers had insulin levels that were as much as 16 percent lower than those who once used or never used the marijuana.
Although researchers expected to find varying results concerning the two different types of diabetes but were surprised to note that the results were consistent with both Type 1 and Type 2 versions of the disease.
In Type 1 cases, marijuana use resulted in lowering blood sugar fasting levels, which reduced the need for insulin injection. In Type 2 patients, the cannabis made patients less resistant to the insulin and enabled them to manage their glucose levels more effectively.
Here is an added reefer bonus. Marijuana is an effective treatment for glaucoma, which can develop as a consequence of diabetes diagnosis. Diabetics are 40 percent more likely to develop the eye illness compared to people who don’t have the blood sugar disease. Typically, glaucoma results as a consequence of pressure building up inside the eye, but varying marijuana strains can help to decrease that pressure.
Although scientists don’t dare claim that marijuana can cure diabetes, they are increasingly ready to confirm that it’s a powerful medicine that can treat the blood sugar disease and its many side effects.
