Living a life with diabetes is all about keeping things steady. Having a morning routine that can help you do that can make your life a whole lot easier.
Here are 5 morning habits that will do just that.
#1 Coconut Oil Pulling
The link between diabetes and gum disease has been established for years now. Because of this well-established link, many doctors recommend that diabetics maintain good oral hygiene. Recent research has begun revealing the powerful effects of oil pulling on oral hygiene, making this easy morning routine a useful one.
To practice oil pulling, simply take about a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 20 minutes on an empty stomach. Spit the contents into your garbage can and brush your mouth clean without any toothpaste. The oil will pull all of the bacteria and toxins out of your teeth and gums.
#2 Lemon Water
Having a glass of water with lemon squeezed into it is a great way to start the day. The lemon helps stimulate your metabolism and detoxes your organs. It’s also packed with vitamin C, so it helps boost your already taxed immune system.
#3 Cold Shower
Cold showers are all the rage at the moment, and for good a reason. Immersing the body in cold water signals the body to release norepinephrine, a hormone that calms you down. This hormone also signals an anti-inflammatory response throughout the body, helping to soothe you on a cellular level. How cool is that?
#4 Brisk Walk
Exercise can help regulate blood sugar and increase insulin sensitivity. But that’s not all. A brisk 30-minute walk each morning will help boost your metabolism, jumpstart your organs and blood flow, release neurotransmitters that will elevate your mood and also help you shed a few pounds. There really is no reason not to do it!
#5 Protein-Rich Breakfast
Protein slows down the digestion process so that carbohydrates don’t cause a spike in blood glucose. Protein also helps you feel full longer and gives you the energy for the day. An omelet is a great way to get your dose of protein in the morning. Try pairing it was fresh avocado for healthy fats and fiber and a totally diabetes-friendly breakfast.
